TabletCARD™: FAQs

Mass Storage

Q. What types of mass-storage devices are supported on the TabletCARD?
A. The TabletCARD supports primary and secondary ATA100 IDE interfaces. The primary IDE interface connects to a 50-pin socket and a 40-pin header that permits the use of a 2.5" IDE HDD and removable media such as a CD-ROM respectively. The secondary IDE interface connects to an ATA CompactFlash socket that is compatible with an ATA CompactFlash, Sandisk, or IBM Microdrive.

The 2.5" IDE HDD is powered through the IDE 50-pin socket whereas the IDE 40-pin connected device requires a separate AT power supply.

ATA133 IDE HDDs are only supported in ATA100 IDE mode.

Q. How can I configure the master/slave settings for the mass-storage devices connected to the TabletCARD?
A.The master/slave setting for 2.5" IDE HDD and an IDE 40-pin connected device on the primary IDE interface is done through a jumper selection on the TabletCARD. Please refer to the TabletCARD user manual for jumper setting details. The master/slave setting for 2.5" IDE HDD and CD-ROM is done on the IDE interface of these devices. This jumper setting is manufacturer dependent; therefore, please refer to the device user manual for jumper setting details. If the IDE devices being connected do not support master/slave control, only one device may be connected to the primary IDE interface on the TabletCARD.

The ATA CompactFlash device connected to the secondary IDE interface is always a master device.

Q. Are CompactFlash and Microdrive supported on the TabletCARD?
A. The TabletCARD supports a Type II card socket on the secondary IDE interface, which is compatible with an ATA CompactFlash, Sandisk, or IBM Microdrive.

Q. Is DiskOnChip supported on the TabletCARD?
A. No. The DiskOnChip technology requires additional BIOS support as well as special device drivers whereas ATA CompactFlash or IBM Microdrive support is transparent to the OS, application software and BIOS.

Q. Can I use a 2.5" HDD and a CD-ROM simultaneously with an ATA CompactFlash device?
A. Yes. The TabletCARD supports primary and secondary IDE interfaces. The primary IDE interface is connected to the 2.5" IDE HDD socket and a 40-pin header for removable media such as a CD-ROM. The secondary IDE interface is connected to the ATA IDE CompactFlash socket.
