SwissBlade™: FAQs

Mass Storage

Q. What types of mass-storage devices are supported on the SwissBlade?
A. The SwissBlade provides connections to two IDE devices via primary and secondary ATA100 IDE interfaces. The primary IDE interface connects to a 44-pin header that permits the use of a single 2.5" IDE HDD. The secondary IDE interface connects to a True IDE CompactFlash socket that is compatible with a True IDE CompactFlash or Hitachi Microdrive.

The 2.5" IDE HDD is powered through the IDE 44-pin socket.

ATA133 IDE HDDs are only supported in ATA100 IDE mode.

Q. How can I configure the master/slave settings for the mass-storage devices connected to the SwissBlade?
A. PFU systems recommends that only one 2.5" IDE HDD be connected to the primary IDE header. Most 2.5" IDE HDDs ship from the factory configured as master.

The True IDE CompactFlash device connected to the secondary IDE interface is always a master device.

Q. Are CompactFlash and Microdrive supported on the SwissBlade?
A. The SwissBlade supports a Type II CompactFlash slot on the secondary IDE interface, which is compatible with an True IDE CompactFlash or Hitachi Microdrive.

Q. Is DiskOnChip supported on the SwissBlade?
A. No. The DiskOnChip technology requires additional BIOS support as well as special device drivers whereas ATA CompactFlash or IBM Microdrive support is transparent to the OS, application software and BIOS.

Q. Can I use a 2.5" HDD and a CD-ROM simultaneously with an ATA CompactFlash device?
A. Yes. The SwissBlade supports primary and secondary IDE interfaces. The primary IDE interface is connected to a 44-pin header for 2.5" HDD. The secondary IDE interface is connected to the True IDE CompactFlash socket.

Q. How can I load an OS onto a system comprising of the Plug-N-Run G3 and SwissBlade?
A. For system development purposes, PFU Systems recommend the use of an USB CDROM drive. For production, PFU Systems recommends commercial hard disk drive programmers.
